What you need to know.
On Android 12 and newer, a green privacy indicator appears when an app is using the camera or microphone. On iPhone, a green indicator means the camera, or the camera and microphone together, are being used. An orange indicator means the microphone is being used without the camera. The indicator is your warning light. It is not the problem. Ask why it appeared.

02 / Check
Look at what is allowed.
- ANDROID On Android, when the indicator appears, swipe down and tap the indicator to identify which app or service is using the camera or microphone.
- IPHONE On iPhone, open Control Center to see which app recently used the camera or microphone.
03 / Do
Make one useful change.
- If the access matches what you were intentionally doing, no action is needed.
- If it does not match, review that app’s camera and microphone permissions and reduce or remove access as appropriate. Do not disable the privacy indicator itself.
04 / Verify
Check the change stuck.
- Intentionally trigger camera or microphone use in an app you trust.
- Confirm the expected privacy indicator appears and the app identified by the OS matches what you were doing.
- Confirm the indicator and access stop when expected.
